Birth Story of Veda Vyasa

According to Hindu scriptures, Maharishi Ved Vyas was born 3000 years ago on the auspicious day of Ashadha Purnima. He was the son of Maharishi Parashara and Devi Satyavati, the great-grandmother of the Kauravas and Pandavas. Maharishi Ved Vyas’s birth name was Krishna Dvaipayana Vyas and it is believed that he was the greatest sage and scholar of his time Vyas Puja 2024.

One day, Sage Parashara was in a great hurry to reach somewhere to perform a Yagya when he came across the river Yamuna. He looked around for a way to cross the river and found a person on a boat. He requested the person to drop him across the river. As he boarded the boat, he realised that it was a woman who was rowing the boat and that her name was Satyavati.

He was fascinated by her beauty and shrouded the entire area around the boat in fog and created an artificial island with his powers, to make sure that nobody could see them. The Sage proposed that they make love. When they were done, Sage Parashar told the young woman, Satyavati, that as soon as he leaves, a boy will be born who would become the greatest Guru and enlighten the world with the knowledge of the Vedas.

He also blessed her that she would remain a virgin even after the birth of their son. He took all the foul smell of fish coming from her body and gave her the everlasting sweet fragrance of musk.

After that Satyavati gave birth to a child, and the child grew up to be Ved Vyas. He told his mother that she had done her part in fulfilling the divine purpose by giving birth to him and there was nothing more to do for him and promised her that whenever she would need him, he would be there.

Ved Vyas gave heir to Hastinapur

Satyavati got married to King Shantanu and had two sons named Vichitravirya and Chitrangada. Shantanu’s death and Bhishma’s oath to not take up the throne of Hastinapur led to the coronation of her sons.

Satyavati became the queen of the kingdom and her sons got married, while Bhishma accepted Brahmacharya and continued to follow the path of celibacy. Hastinapur flourished and prospered under the authority of Vichitravirya but unfortunately, both Vichitravirya and Chitrangada died early without leaving an heir behind to take care of the throne.

The empty throne was like an invitation for other kingdoms to attack and usurp the kingdom of Hastinapur. To get out of such a dire situation, Satyavati thought of her son Vyas and called for him to help her. Vyas gave birth to Vidura, Dhritarashtra, and Pandu, who grew up to be the future kings of Hastinapur, while Vidura became a shrewd scholar and the minister of the kingdom.
